Where the money goes

• Server costs. The crawler, AI analysis, and the article-detail cache run on our own infrastructure 24/7.
• AI compute. Editorial content (Flash Digest, story breakdowns, viewpoint panels) is generated through paid LLM APIs. Per-article cost is small but it adds up across thousands of articles a day.
• Editorial. Source selection, classifier tuning, prompt engineering, fact-checking — humans drive the editorial standards. Donations help fund that time.
• No ad-network arms race. Reader funding means we don't need to chase the cheapest ad network or compromise the user experience with intrusive formats.

Why this matters

Most ad-funded news sites are now optimized for engagement metrics — clicks, scroll depth, time on page. That structural pressure favors outrage, polarization, and sensationalism. We're trying to do something different: give readers tools to understand the news rather than just react to it. Tools like the bias slider, Story Breakdown pages, and Flash Digest are built around that goal. Reader support is what lets us keep building toward that mission rather than the engagement maximum.
