Alarm was further deepened by footage showing him "frozen in place" for an extended period on the Senate floor even before this episode.McConnell's last public statement, dated August 6, said he was continuing an "intensive regimen of physical therapy" at home. But when HuffPost reached out three weeks later asking whether he'd be back for Thursday's Senate session, communications director Stephanie Penn wouldn't even characterize how his recovery was going.Penn told HuffPost she had "nothing to add" beyond the three-week-old statement.Adding to the intrigue, a video filmed by Alysia McMillian and shared by independent journalist Desirée Townsend showed boxes for MCombo lift recliners visible through McConnell's briefly opened front door — motorized chairs designed to help people with limited mobility sit down and stand up, commonly used during recovery from surgery or serious illness.McConnell's team has released only two photos of him since his hospitalization, both met with skepticism online, including speculation that they were AI-generated. He hasn't called into any news outlets himself, despite claims from allies like CNN contributor Scott Jennings that they've spoken with him directly. His chief of staff, Terry Carmack, has also declined to answer questions about McConnell's condition.
