A Republican congressional candidate in Texas who has repeatedly drawn controversy over his inflammatory remarks once described fantasizing about running over cyclists with his car — and suggested he could get away with it.Brandon Herrera, a gun-rights activist and YouTube personality running in Texas’ 23rd Congressional District, made the disturbing remarks during a 2022 episode of the "Rekieta Law" podcast, according to a report Monday in MeidasTouch.Asked what triggered “unreasonable bouts of anger,” Herrera immediately singled out cyclists. “I f-----g hate cyclists,” Herrera declared as he launched into a profanity-laced tirade about groups of bicyclists.“I just, like, I had f-----g fantasies of running them all over,” Herrera said. “And, you know, maybe one of these days I will. I don’t know.”The conversation took an even darker turn when the host, Nick Law, suggested motorists should be “legally allowed to run over” cyclists who fall behind their groups.“Oh, buddy, I have thought about ways that I could get away with it,” Herrera responded. “I feel like I could have done it without going to jail, but I don't."Herrera also made a disparaging reference to a cyclist being someone’s “mentally impaired uncle.”“You’d be doing them a favor,” Law said in the disturbing exchange.
