White House lashes out after Trump's 9/11 story reduced to rubble

The White House offered no evidence Tuesday to support President Donald Trump’s latest account of his actions near Ground Zero following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.Trump claimed during a ceremony honoring 9/11 emergency personnel that two firefighters lifted him and carried him away from a building they feared would collapse. Multiple critics noted that Trump was nowhere near the towers on 9/11 and that his account was completely made up. CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale said he asked the White House for evidence or additional details about Trump’s account but received neither. “Asked for evidence for and/or more details about the president's latest claims about himself and 9/11, the White House provided none,” Dale wrote on X.Instead, spokesperson Davis Ingle accused the media of trying to attack Trump.“President Trump spent the morning paying tribute to the heroic first responders who laid down their lives in service to others in the September 11th attacks and honoring their incredible families,” Ingle said. “The President was relaying his experience of a city reeling immediately after and in the days and weeks after the horrific attacks,” he added before unleashing a familiar White House attack on CNN.“The fact that the failing legacy media is using this to try to attack him is a disgrace and yet another reason why Americans’ trust in the media is at an all-time low,” the spokesperson said.Democratic strategist Adam Parkhomenko called the response an example of “the White House doubling down on Trump’s lies about Sept. 11.” Asked for evidence for and/or more details about the president's latest claims about himself and 9/11, the White House provided none, instead sending along this media criticism from spokesperson Davis Ingle:“President Trump spent the morning paying tribute to the heroic first…— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) September 8, 2026
